Description:

White corundum (WFA) is a high purity, synthetic mineral, manufactured by the fusion of controlled quality pure grade Alumina in an electric arc furnace at temperatures greater than 2000°C followed by a slow solidification process. It is a very hard, tough, and stable mineral. For all practical purposes, it is the hardest mineral after Diamond, making it the second hardest mineral. It is also unaffected by acids and most environments. The iron-free non-disposable abrasive is extremely strong, brittle and does have an aggressive impact on a blasted surface. Since it is iron-free, white corundum is very suitable for blasting stainless steel and non-ferrous metal. It is less hard and more angular compared to its brown counterpart. However it exhibits faster rate of work and produce less heat upon friction. It is often used to polish glass. White Corundum also finds applications in vitrified grinding wheels, as sharpening agent for cutting tools, and precision milling equipments among other similar applications. The market for synthetically produced Corundum is driven by these industrial abrasion applications. The gemstone market is however driven by natural Corundum which are mined and processed.
